Wu Tang Lego

When I was a kid I’m sure there was a saying that my momma used to say that went something like ‘lego is for christmas but Wu Tang is forever’ or maybe I made that up. The point is that the Wu and Lego go together like butterscotch and leather. We’ve already seen the lego album covers with a Wu ‘tang’ but now its gone next level with a full lego remake of classic moments from the Wu’s classic debut album 36 Chambers.

The pinnacle of this collection of vids by Davo is a full length shot for shot recreation of ‘Da Mystery of Chessboxin’ video as seen above. All this has been made possible by the general publics imagination and the new lego which has more facial expressions, detail and most importantly New Era hats.

My personal favourite is the 7th Chamber intro or Killer tape skit as its been labelled which features some brilliant acting by the lego clansmen.

We get a bit of ODB in the Raw Interlude too but no Method Man intro yet. I can’t wait for that, ‘I sew ya asshole closed and keep feeding you and feeding you.’ How do you show that with lego?

My only question is where will all this cross pollination end? Whats next Wu Tang pancakes? Oh wait did someone already do that…

Adidas Def Jam Ghostface

Adidas have teamed up with Def Jam to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the iconic hip hop label by launching a Def Jam themed line of trainers. The range will include adi favourites like Superstars, Stan Smiths, Sambas and Forums sporting the Def Jam logo as well as a number of exclusives named and themed after Def Jam artists.

Some of the names getting the adidas treatment are a little underwhelming like ‘Young Jeezy’ for example (I hear tumbleweed) but never fear there’s a beautiful blue pair of Ghostface Forum’s to save the day and steal the show. They come embossed with a nice big golden G on what looks like suede but is probably nubuck knowing Adidas and are definitely essentials for sneaker freaks and Wu aficionados alike.

Ghost also gets a second helping of Adi love with his own pair of Superstars which have black shelltoes which is a nice touch. Not as visually imposing as the blue colourway but they appear to have spent a lot of time on small details and premium materials. Oh and you can just make out a ‘Tony Starks’ epithet under the trefoil on the back of the shoe which is dope.

Method Man also gets in on the act with black and yellow Wu killa bee style Stan Smith in his honour embossed with a M on the rear of the shoe. They look to be suede with a leather tongue but no ‘Johnny Blaze’ moniker to be seen, minus points for that Mr Dassler.

Meth also gets a second helping with his own version of the Superstar in two tone blue with his original Wu styled inverted W on the rear of the shoe. I can’t for the life of me read what it says under the trefoil but I like to think it says ‘Ticalion Stallion’ but I doubt it.

Finally is the Redman Stan Smith in baby blue with an R and possibly ‘Funk Doc’ (what happened to spock did it infringe Star Treks copyright?) scrawled on the back heel under the adi logo. Personally I think Red got stiffed in the celeb sneaker stakes but maybe he’s on baby blue or worse still is a closet Man City fan…

Some of those old new mixtapes

I was gonna make a long rambling intro explaining the concept of ‘old new’ mixtapes by referencing Ghostface’s Biscuits intro, you know the bit about banana nutrament and being smart dumb? But then I realised only about 3 people would know what I’m on about and this post is gonna be long enough as it is. So old music new twists is the basic gist of this post. There done and dusted in one para.

First up is Memory Man’s Wu tang VS D.I.T.C tape which is totally self explanatory and totally amazing. What could be more perfect as a blend than Ghost and Rae going over Diamond D beats and Big L dropping 16′s on Rza joints? Anything that blends better than that is already a controlled substance for sure. All I can say is read the tracklist download and enjoy.

I love Green Lantern, no homo/pause/proceed as he would say himself (I follow him on twitter so know this is true). Ever since he did the Nas tape and GTA IV soundtrack he has been on a roll and he shows no signs of er slowing his roll. This tape however is made great by Joell Ortiz’s lyrical dexterity, all round 90′s knowledge and chameleon flow.

For those that don’t know Ortiz already, he has been steadily making a name for himself on the underground after an initial buzz that saw him signed to the majors and then dropped. He is now lyrically bonafide and part of 1 of the most exciting conglomerates in hip hop Slaughterhouse, which also includes lyrical heavyweight Royce 5″9.

Back to Covers the Classics though which is a high speed ride through some of the defining moments of 90′s hip hop revamped by Mr Ortiz for 2009. The interesting thing here is Joell goes over the old beats and often imitates the original flow, rides off the original lyrics or simply redefines the original like on Rican Ebonics 09 an update on Big L’s classic. The cover of the tape is amazing too, just makes me wanna dig through my old shoeboxes full of cassettes.
